About

The Department of Commerce at University College for Women is an apt culmination of virtuous wishes and fruitful results. The Department has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of undertaking research work and arranging guest lecturers of eminent speakers from across the varied fields of study. The Department of Commerce, OUCW was established in the year 1968. It offers Commerce Education for about 700 students both at Under-Graduation and Post-Graduation Levels. The Department of Commerce offers three self-finance courses along with the Regular B.Com. and M.Com. Courses viz., B.Com. (Honors), B.Com. (Computers) and B.Com. (Taxation). Due to the rich and updated inputs envisaged in the curriculum of the Department as is suited to the needs of the industry, the college has successfully placed B.Com. Students in companies like Capital I.Q., Bank of America, HSBC, Infosys to name a few. The Department also runs a Tax Consultancy Cell and facilitates filing of the income tax returns of the faculty members of the college and the university through a program 'CLIQUE'.

The Department in its pursuit to offer value education and meet the requirements of the industry has made computer component and commerce lab, a part of the course curriculum. UG Self-finance Course IV Semester students have to undergo an internship program during the summer vacation and submit a Project Report at the end of the Course for 100 marks.


B.Com. Taxation:


UGC sponsored course B.Com. Taxation was started in the year 1994. Apart from Commerce Regular Course papers, other subjects like Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Service Tax, Customs Duties and Central Excise Duty (Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes) are offered to the students. The Department has an understanding with the Chartered Accountant firms for providing internship program for a period of four weeks to the IV Semester Students. Every year, students are sent to the Chartered Accountant firms viz., M.Bhasker Rao and Co., Tukaram and Co., Murthy and Prasad and Co., Nataraja Iyer & Co., Subramanyam & Sivudu, J.K. Rao Associates, D. Venugopal & Co. and Grandhy & Co. for their Internship Program.

B.Com. Computers:


The course was started in the year 2002. It aims at building and developing the ICT skills by introducing the subjects such as Information Technology, E-Commerce, Web Designing and Relational Data Base Management Systems especially in their course curriculum, helping them improving their job marketability. The Internship Program was introduced in the academic year 2005-06 which is offered to B.Com. II year students. The students are trained the students are trained in Practical Accountancy with Tally package and are also trained in Hardware and Networking which enhances their System Maintenance skills.


B.Com. Honors:


The course was started in the Department in the year 2005 and the first Internship program was held during the academic year 2007-08. The Internship structure was designed after taking suggestions from the experts in the respective areas. Chartered Accountants, Multimedia specialists, Statisticians and Experts in Computer Accounting Packages are invited to conduct the internship program. The program is offered to the students of B.Com (Honors) with the aim of creating awareness on live projects that can be executed using various accounting packages like Tally, Focus, Wings, SPSS and Multimedia


INFRASTRUCTURE:


The Department is endowed with excellent physical infrastructural facilities to support teaching and learning process. It has well furnished IT Lab, Commerce Lab and a Training Cell with latest configuration PCs and UPS and a Generator.

Certificate Course in Tally


The Department of Commerce in collaboration with Tally Solutions Pvt. Ltd is planning to train the trainers in Tally software in the ensuing months by offering a certificate course in Tally on self financing basis.


Certificate Course in SPSS Advanced Statistics

The Department of Commerce plans to offer SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) which is a comprehensive statistical and data management package for analysts and researchers. It helps them in managing quantitative data more effectively; interpret complex data output and use various inferential statistics (e.g. chi-square, correlation, regression, ANOVA).
