The Department of English offers courses in General English and Modern Language at the undergraduate level and M.A. in English at P.G. level. The English Language Teaching Centre of the Department offers Certificate courses in English Proficiency.

English Language Teaching Centre

The English Language Teaching Centre of the department has been organizing proficiency courses in English (Preliminary & Advanced) in two batches every year. The in-take of candidates is from 100-150 per each batch. The Centre has acquired audio-visual equipment (VCD Player + TV) for use in these courses as well as the regular PG course of the department. Under its expansion programme with the acquisition of New computer based Language Lab, the centre has started new courses including a Crash Course, English for Employability for the UG and PG students of this college. Morning batches for housewives started in 2005. The centre also conducts workshops on ‘interview Skills’ for the students and ‘Communication at Work place’ for the non teaching staff of the college once a year. A special course in Communication Skills was offered to M.Sc. Biotechnology students. The Centre has acquired the following equipment and furniture: a) Rooms : Audio Visual room (VCD Player + T.V., OHP Language Lab) Office room + Library + Staff, Class room Computer-based Language Laboratory.

Courses »

The Department of English offers compulsory courses in General English to undergraduate students. These courses are designed to inculcate basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening for more effective communication. The Department also offers a course in English as a Modern Language at the undergraduate level to impart to the students advanced skills in communication and literary appreciation. The Department also offers a postgraduate course in English where students are admitted on the basis of a common entrance test conducted by the Osmania University. Over the years, the Department has developed expertise in a variety of areas such as British Literature, American Literature, Post Colonial Literature and ELT. The Department of English has restructured its General English and Modern Language Courses for undergraduate students along the lines suggested by the UGC Curriculum Development Plan. The objectives of the General English Course are: a. To equip the student for her current and future academic pursuits: to understand classroom lectures, read textbooks, do reference reading; participate in classroom discussion and attempt assignments and examination. b. To prepare her to function effectively in her future profession, c. To prepare her to function effectively in various social situations in which she may be called upon to use English. d. To impart training in reading poetry. The Modern Language Programme has been substantially revised to include components that would prepare under graduate students for different careers related to language and literature.

The objectives of this course are »

  • To provide and intensive introduction to the study of literature from the 16th to contemporary via a study of three genres; Poetry, Drama and Prose (Fictional & Non-Fictional).
  • To familiarize the students with major currents in literary criticism and enhance their skills of critical reading.
  • To train students in pronunciation skills and writing skills with special focus: i) review of literary texts and ii) Technical Writing.
  • To give students basic training in linguistics, phonetics and modern grammar.
  • To extend training in computer aided writing skills. Teachers of the Department constantly review the syllabus in the light of changing academic needs of students and requirements of job market. Research in curriculum development is one of the strengths of the Department.

Material Production Project »

It is one of the major achievements of the Department, OUCW. Under the status of autonomy, the department organized this project and prepared two course books for the undergraduate General English Programme in two phases. During the first phase, “Pleasures of Reading” an anthology of poems was published by Orient Longman, Hyderabad. In the second phase, “English Today” a course in reading and writing was published by Foundation Books, Hyderabad. The course material was run as a pilot project for two semesters before publication and was revised extensively depending on the feedback provided by the students of all the faculties.
